Situated on the banks of the picturesque Vembanad Lake, this Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary offers best South India bird watching and spreaded over an area of 14 acres, is known for its amazing bird population. Other than the vast number of permanent residents, the park is also home to a large variety of migratory birds including the Siberian stork, egret, darter, heron and teal, which make it an ornithologist's delight. This is one of the very famous bird Sanctuaries in Kerala.


This South India bird watching is a stroll through the dense forests of the park introduces visitors to the exotic species of birds that include migratory birds from the Himalayas and even from places like Siberia. One wonders how these beautiful creatures manage to cross such long distances and reach the same place year after year. These famous bird sanctuaries in Kerala are maintained with much delicate care.

Another major attraction of this South India bird watching area is the Pathiramanal Island. Apart from the referred Kerala Bird Sanctuary, this Pathiramanal Island is Spreaded over an area of 10 acres, the island can easily be accessed through a boat. The enchanting backwaters, surrounding the area are an interesting and convenient way to explore the wildlife of the park. Kerala Bird Sanctuary has the rarest birds to be watched and kids enjoy watching the variety of different birds.

The wildlife park is home to an exotic variety of plant and bird life. Thousands of trees in the park act as an ideal habitat to build nests on, for the huge number of birds. The bird population in the park includes waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron, the water duck, parrots, teal, larks, flycatchers and wood beetle.

The migratory birds, which visit the park all round the year, are one of the major tourists attractions. Some of the birds that draw a large number of crowds include Siberian stork, egret, darter, heron and teal.

The best way to observe the birds is to take a cruise in a houseboat or motorboat, through the tranquil backwaters of Kerala. The boats can be hired at reasonable prices from the administration department of the park.

By Air - Kumarakom is just 16 km from Kottayam. After flying into India through Mumbai or Chennai, you can catch a flight to Kerala to any of its three airports at Kochi, Kozhikode or Thiruvananthapuram.
By Rail - The best way to reach the park is to board a train to Kottayam and then take a bus or any other local form of transport to the park.
By Road - The park can be accessed by road from all the neighbouring cities in and outside the state. Cochin International Airport is just 85 km from the Muhamma Boat Jetty.
By Water - The park can be accessed by the water route through the enchanting backwaters of Kerala by taking a ferry or a houseboat. There are many boat services that start from Kochi.
