Tourist Attractions in Quilon

Quilon was an international emporium of trade and even now it is a prosperous commercial centre.

Quilon edges with the famous Astamudi lake.

Many a foreign traveller has visited Quilon in the early midieval period. Quilon was one of the early centres of Christian activity in Kerala.

The popularity of Quilon has been established by the time-honoured proverb once you see Quilon, you will not need your home any more. Quilon has several tourist attractions.

The 144 ft. Thangassery Light house, built in 1902, is a centre of attraction in Quilon.

The Ananda Valleeswaram Temple of Quilon attracts people on almost all days.

There are several Churches and Mosques around Quilon.

The Pullichira Church was established in 1700 A.D. One of the oldest and most important Mosques in Quilon is the Chinnakkada Palli. The Thangal Kunju Musaliar College of Engineering,

the first of its king in the state, is at Kilikolloor, about 7 kms. east of Quilon town.

Thenmala
Situated 67 km east of Kollam, Thenmala is a small village at the foothills of Western Ghats covered by dense forest, rubber and tea plantations.

In local jargon Thenmala means ‘honey hills’ and the honey collected from this region is famous for its medicinal value and quality. The major attractions here are the reservoir, dam and meter gauge.

Thenmala is the first eco tourism destination in India and the eco-tourist center provides all the needful assistance

and facilities and enables the tourist to enjoy the nature at the very best. To explore every tourist destination, the region has been divided into culture, leisure and adventure zones.Musical dancing fountain along with amphitheatre, shop court and restaurants are the main attractions of the culture zone.

In the leisure zone, sculpture garden, sway bridge, broad walk etc offers amazing view to the tourists. Besides the sculptures of father and child, some of the charecters of Indian myths such as Ekalavya.

Vikramadithya and Vethalam are there in the sculpture garden. Adventure zone comprises of Elevated Walkway, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing.River Crossing, Nature Trails, Resting Spots, Lotus Pond etc.

One of the important resources of Thenmala Ecotourism is Shenduruney.

Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1984, with a large variety of flora and fauna.

Sprawling over an area of 100.32 Sq. km., this deciduous man made rain forest consists of around 1500 flowering plants, 43 species of mammals and 475 species of birds.

The construction of the Parappar Dam across the confluence of the Shenduruney.

Kazhuthurutty and Kulathupuzha rivers has resulted in the creation of an artificial lake of about 26 Sq. Km.

which spreads along the middle of the sanctuary. Boating through this lake is the major attraction of the sanctuary.

Palaruvi waterfall that is 16 km from Thenmala towards Shenkotah is mind blowing.

Kollam Clock Tower
Standing high in the heart of the town, the Clock tower is a landmark of Kollam city. Located at Chinnakada, close to the Kollam Junction Railway Station, this quadrangular tower was constructed in the year 1944 by the natives as a tribute to the former chairman of Kollam municipality, Unichakam Veedu K G Parameshwaran Pillai. Being the first clock tower of the erstwhile Travancore state, it has now become a sort of non- official emblem of Kollam District. Though the four big clocks that is placed on the sides of the tower were brought from Kolkata, its origin can be traced to Britain.

Picnic Village
Picnic Village, the main center of leisure activities is located at Ashramam, two kilometers away from Kollam town, on the backwater front in 48 acres of land. The main attraction of the village is a 200-year-old Government Guest House noted for its elegance and architectural beauty. Besides the guest house, the vast tourist complex houses an adventure park, a tourist boat club, a children's traffic park and a Yatri nivas.

Thangasseri
Thangasseri, situated 5kms from Kollam town was once a favourite settlement of the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English. Literally meaning 'gold village', this seaside village sprawling over an area of 99 acres, has the ruins of an old Portuguese fort and churches belonging to the 18th century. The Portuguese fort is believed to be built in 1517 and only one wall of this fort remains now.

Mayyanad
Situated at a distance of 10 km south of Kollam town, Mayyanad is a beautiful village on the banks of Paravur Lake. 'Mayyam' means middle and the place got its name because of its location in the middle of the erstwhile Venadu. Another description says that the land was named after ‘Mayyanad Ellam’ who were the rulers of this place during the eighteenth century. The place is famous for its shrines, temples, churches and mosques.
